In a world where many fitness programs come and go like the changing of the seasons, one enduring strategy stands out and endures: training in small groups. Specifically, working out with two friends can transform your fitness journey in ways you might not expect. Three is greater than one in fitness!
Before opening the first HOTWORX concept studio in Oxford, MS, I owned a group training facility where live trainers coached clients in small functional training sessions. It was there, coaching and training as a team, with customers, that I discovered something monumental for fitness, the magic number for group training wasn’t ten, or five or seven, it was three. With a trio, a workout transcends from individual effort to shared momentum. I discovered that three clients was the right number for small group training.
That spirit of camaraderie is what we built into the HOTWORX patented infrared workout sauna, each designed for three clients, because small group teamwork elevates everything. There is no disputing the fact that individual effort is always elevated in the presence of others.
A meta-analysis of interventions to promote physical activity found that exercising in a true group (versus solo settings) showed stronger effects on outcomes like adherence, motivation, and performance. (1)
One of the biggest advantages of training in a trio is accountability. When you work out with two partners, you’re not just committing to yourself—you’re committing to the group. It’s easy to skip a session alone, but much harder when your teammates are expecting you. As one HOTWORX member put it: “I used to hit snooze every morning. Now, knowing my two sauna partners are counting on me, I never miss a session. We hold each other accountable, and it works!” – Sarah M.
Beyond accountability, fitness becomes more fun in a small group. The energy shifts when you’re focused together, encouraging one another, and sharing small victories. It feels less like an obligation and more like a hangout with friends. “The workouts fly by because we’re always laughing and pushing each other. It feels more like hanging out with friends than just exercising!” – Marcus W.
Another benefit of small group training is the exchange of knowledge. Everyone brings their own strengths, whether it’s stamina, flexibility, or strength. Together, you pick up new motivational techniques and encourage each other to step out of your comfort zone. Another HOTWORX member remarked: “I never would’ve tried Hot Pilates if my friends hadn’t pulled me in. Now it’s my favorite session, and I’ve picked up tips that make me stronger in every other workout.” – Jasmine L.
The bonds formed inside the sauna don’t stop when the workout ends. Training in a trio often leads to friendships that grow beyond the studio. Members celebrate victories, share struggles, and find support in each other’s wellness journeys.
It is important to remember that teamwork requires respect for each other…following the rules of the gym is essential in the same way that following rules in any sport and all other endeavors in life is. Rules such as the following member policy updates must be respected to foster the spirit of teamwork, all in the effort to create maximum fitness results for everybody:
Sauna Session Policy
Members may not enter the Sauna until the scheduled appointment time begins. During active sessions, entry is prohibited. All members must exit promptly and remove all belongings when instructed by the Virtual Instructor, and in all cases before the scheduled appointment time ends. Workout appointment times can be found in the HOTWORX App and on studio signage.
Approved HOTWORX Mats, Towels & Personal Belongings Policy
Based on the selected appointment position using the HOTWORX app, members must follow all Virtual Instructor guidelines for placing mats and towels. Mats and towels must be positioned exactly as displayed in the workouts, never diagonally, sideways, or in a manner that interferes with any of the three workout positions. All personal belongings must be stored in cubbies, kept clear of heaters, and placed so they do not interfere with other members’ workouts.
It’s fun to compete with others while playing by the rules!
And, of course, there’s something powerful about a little friendly rivalry. In groups of three, competition tends to spark naturally but stays fun and supportive. Someone sets the bar with a tough plank, and the others push to meet it. Someone crushes calories on Hot Cycle, and everyone cheers them on. “I love the little competitions we create in the sauna. Whether it’s holding planks or crushing calories on Hot Cycle, we push each other to the next level.” – Alicia R.
On top of all of this, small group training at HOTWORX is cost-effective. Instead of paying premium prices for one-on-one coaching, you get all the benefits of instruction through the virtual trainer, combined with the accountability and camaraderie of your teammates, included in your monthly membership.
Fitness doesn’t have to be a solo pursuit. Training in a group of three turns every workout into a shared journey, filled with teamwork, camaraderie, and connection. With the “power of three” on your side, you’ll find yourself showing up more, smiling more, and achieving more than you ever thought possible. Grab two partners, step into the sauna, and discover how much stronger you can become—together.
